Tips for Girls

Some suggestions for the Girls

Bring the colors and outfits you feel best in. For some formal shots, consider bringing a dressy dress, a fancy sweater, even your prom dress – whatever makes you feel dressed up and special. Sweaters or jackets are good for a more traditional look. Other ideas are long sleeved sweaters, sun-dress, shorts, leathers jackets, denim jackets, hats, scarves, sports uniforms. For casual and outdoor shots, you’ll be more relaxed (and we’ll have more posing options) if your outfits are comfortable. If you like an outfit, it’s probably because you look good in it, so make sure you bring it!

DO NOT WEAR any big stripes, prints and bold patterns, shiny materials; sleeveless, spaghetti straps, or short "cap" sleeves Unless your arms are tanned and thin. Be careful of baggy clothes that might make you look larger than you are. Make sure your clothing flatters you. Do not wear contrasts, like a white top with dark pants. If you think you have large arms, be careful of sleeveless styles, they can make your arms look fuller.

Undergarments

It is amazing how many times someone will come in wearing flowered underwear and not realize it is a problem until they go to put on their WHITE PANTS! Or come in wearing a white bra and put on a black sleeveless shirt. Please bring appropriate foundation wear for each outfit. Flesh colored is the best you can hope for. Also, if you need a strapless, bring one. Tucking the straps down usually shows and looks bad. With today's thin fabrics, you might want to carefully select these pieces so they do not give unsightly lines.

Make-up

Apply your usual cover-up to any noticeable blemishes. Don’t worry – complexion issues can also be dealt with after the fact. You want to look your best, but also to look natural. Girls, wear your makeup as you normally do when you want to look your best. Apply makeup as if you were going out for the evening. Too little and you'll look pale and washed out; too much makes you look "painted." Pay special attention to your eyes; that's what everyone will see first in your portraits. Mascara should be clean and contain no clumps. Please don't wear heavy make-up, we can fix blemishes. This also comes across as bad skin tones in the final portrait.

Jewelry

The best tip here is to keep it simple. We want the attention on you. Big, shiny jewelry can distract from the real subject, you. **If you have different jewelry for different outfits, you might put each set of jewelry in a plastic baggie and hang it on the hanger with that outfit.Note: Wrist watches appear very masculine when worn by a woman. Unless a watch has sentimental value, I recommend that you not wear it to your portrait session.

Hair

Wear your hair the way you like it best and don't try a new hairstyle for your session. New styles are great, but make sure it is what you want before your portrait session. Keep your hair smooth because loose ends will pick up light and show prominently, especially when we back-light it to get that glamorous glow. Very light hair spray will help, but too much will look brittle, not beautiful. Clean hair makes for a healthy appearance, but just-washed hair may appear frizzy. You know your own hair and can decide if you should wash it the day of your session or the day before.
